DATA
Published caffeine values for hojicha, with test conditions
Published caffeine values for hojicha and other teas, each with the conditions under which it was measured. Japan's composition tables give hojicha 20 mg per 100 mL, the same as sencha.
Key findings
- Japan's composition tables give hojicha 20 mg per 100 mL of infusion, the same as sencha.
- Bancha and genmaicha are 10 mg, but the table rounds to 0.01 g, so this cannot be read as half.
- A bowl of matcha is 48 mg; a 150 mL cup of hojicha is about 30 mg [calculated].
- In a Kochi Prefecture trial, dark roasting reduced caffeine by about 6–13% and light roasting left it almost unchanged.
- In sencha measurements, an hour in 10°C water releases about half as much as 2 minutes at 80°C (an index of about 50, with 80°C for 2 minutes as 100).
- No acceptable daily intake (ADI) has been set, in Japan or internationally.

How it was counted
- We collected the published and trial values cited in our articles, together with their test conditions.
- None of these values were measured by the association.
- Values measured under different conditions cannot be compared directly.
- In the composition tables, two groups share conditions: bancha, hojicha, genmaicha and oolong; and sencha and kamairicha.
- The tables round to 0.01 g, so 10 mg and 20 mg cannot be read as "double".
- [calculated] marks values the association calculated from published figures.
- The test conditions behind Maruhachi Seichajo's 16 mg are unverified.
- Sources were checked on the articles' verification date, 22 September 2026.
